How to Make Bacon and Cheese Little Dog Bone Treats

Bacon Cheese Dog Bones combine two favorite flavors of dogs–bacon and cheese. And they look as yummy as they taste—so I'm told…

In truth, these delicious looking homemade dog bones do look (and taste) good enough to grace any bakery shelf—dog bakery or people bakery!

And, using common ingredients from your kitchen, you can easily make these homemade dog treats in an afternoon.

Bacon Cheese Dog Bones

Bacon Cheese Dog Bone Treats
with melted cheese and bacon bits.

This recipe was created forNatural Pet Bakery, and I used powdered cheeses (parmesan and cheddar) and soy bacon bits or real bacon bits (like you use on salads), which were mixed into the dough.

That was easy when I was making a large batch of cheese dog bones.

However, if you'd like to add a little glitz to your dog treats, you can do it this way… Just before you finish baking your dog bones, sprinkle them with shredded cheddar cheese and bacon bits. Return them to the oven and heat until they are melted.

You'll end up with dog bones that have the delicious look that you see in the photo.

Of course you'll need some dog bone cookie cutters. If you don't have any, you can find some dog bone cookie cutters here.

Ingredients for Bacon Cheese Dog Bones

  • 1 cup water
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil or olive oil
  • 1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 1/2 cups unbleached flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp. dry yeast
  • 2 T. Parmesan cheese or cheddar cheese powder
  • 1 T. turmeric powder
  • 2 T. real bacon bits or imitation soy bacon bits
  • 1 T. dry milk
  • Shredded cheddar cheese (for topping)

Directions

  1. Place all the ingredients (except the shredded cheddar cheese) in your bread maker.
  2. Set the breadmaker for the Dough cycle.
  3. When the dough is done, remove it and divide it into 3 pieces.
  4. Roll the dough until it is 1/8″ to ½" thick. This depends on the size bone cookie cutter that you are using. For the mini 1" bones, use 1/8″ thick. For 3-5″ bones, use ¼" thick. For 6-8" bones, use ½" thick.
  5. Cut the bones into bone shapes and place them on a greased cookie sheet.
  6. Cover the dog treats with a clean towel and let them rise in a warm place for 45-60 minutes.
  7. Before placing the bones in the oven, sprinkle shredded cheese on them and top with a few bacon bits.
  8. Bake the dog bones at 275 degrees F for 45-60 minutes. Check often to make sure that they don't get too brown.
  9. Turn off the oven and let the dog bone treats finish drying overnight in the oven.

Dog Treat Storage

If you dry these treats properly in the oven, you will be able to store these Baco Cheese Dog Bone Treats at room temperature in a Fire Hydrant Ceramic Cookie Jar for up to 3 months.

However, if you melt fresh cheddar cheese on top of the cheese dog bones, store them in the refrigerator, in an airtight food storage container to prevent the possibility of mold.

Have a dog that adores cheese treats? You can use that love of cheese to your advantage. These healthy dental treats have a cheese flavor, help keep your dog's teeth clean and also freshen his breath! Doesn't get any better than that!
